about the Kingdom of God
What: A one-day conference
Theme: “What is the meaning of Jesus’ proclamation, ‘The kingdom of God is among you’?”
Who: People of faith and good will
Sponsored by Vesper Society, the conference is the culmination of our year-long exploration and an opportunity for reflection together on what we have learned. Moderated by Gregory Pierce and Judy Valente, an award-winning broadcast journalist and writer, the conference will more deeply explore the themes of Mr. Pierce’s recent book “The World as it Should Be: Living Authentically in the Here-and-Now Kingdom of God“, including the central question: Is the world proclaimed by Jesus to have already begun — “on earth as it is in heaven” — an impossible dream? Or is it a world that Christians are called upon to help build every day?
Throughout the day, panels comprising young adults, representatives of various religious and philosophical traditions, and believers and searchers alike will consider these themes and add their insights to the discussion. We’ll also explore practical strategies to mobilize individuals and congregations to work for justice — to build a future based on Jesus’ vision of compassion, forgiveness, and love. For a wider perspective, we will be joined by observers from other faith and ethical backgrounds, who will offer their own views on these important topics.
Finally, we will together craft the Declaration for Hope, to be presented at the end of the conference for all to affirm as our common purpose, and to use as a set of guiding principles as we seek to ignite hope in our daily lives.
Ms. Valente is a journalist, poet, and award-winning contributor to the national PBS news program Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly. She is co-editor of the inspirational book, Twenty Poems to Nourish Your Soul.
